Building resilient communities through humanity, hope, and sustainable action

Jimriya Humanitarian Initiatives (JHI) is a Nigerian NGO led by refugees and internally displaced people. We work with displaced and host communities across northern Adamawa State on protection, food security and agriculture, livelihoods, mental health and psychosocial support, education and peacebuilding.

Who we are

Led by people who know displacement first-hand

JHI is a refugee- and IDP-led organisation. Our leaders have lived through displacement, so we understand the risks displaced families face, and we work as part of the communities we serve.

We began in 2024 as Hope and Resilience Initiative, a cooperative society that supported vulnerable households through community solidarity, economic empowerment and social support. Our work on gender-based violence in 2024 and 2025 showed us that violence rarely stands alone. It is tied to poverty, displacement, limited education, mental distress and unresolved conflict.

In 2026 we registered as Jimriya Humanitarian Initiatives so we could tackle these problems together, at greater scale.

Our vision

To build resilient, peaceful, and inclusive communities where every person enjoys dignity, protection, equal opportunities, and sustainable livelihoods.

Our mission

To improve the quality of life of vulnerable populations by delivering integrated humanitarian and development programs that strengthen protection systems, expand livelihood opportunities, promote mental health and psychosocial well-being, improve access to quality education, and foster lasting peace through community participation and strategic partnerships.

Why fund JHI

A local partner for locally led humanitarian response

Nigeria's humanitarian response is moving toward local leadership. JHI is ready to lead projects, join consortia and deliver.

  • Refugee- and IDP-led

People with lived experience of displacement lead our work, which gives us trust and access in displacement-affected communities.

  • Proven with UNHCR

  • Results we can show

Our sensitisation on early and forced marriage reached more than 1,000 people and recorded behaviour change in the communities we worked with.

  • Safe and accountable

Zero tolerance for sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment, a Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct, and a commitment to listen and respond to the communities we serve.

How we work

Led by communities, guided by principle

Communities lead
Communities identify their own priorities and help design, run and review the programmes that affect them. We strengthen local leaders and community structures so the gains last.
Accountable to the people we serve
We keep communities informed and consulted, listen through feedback and complaints channels, and adapt our programmes to what we hear.
Do no harm
Our programmes are conflict-sensitive and designed to avoid unintended harm while strengthening social cohesion.
Humanitarian principles
We give assistance on the basis of need alone, without discrimination, guided by humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence.
Evidence-based
We plan from needs assessments, baseline studies and vulnerability analyses, and we track results through our monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL) system.
Inclusive
Women, men, girls, boys, older persons and persons with disabilities have fair access to our services and a voice in decisions.

Across all programmes we integrate gender equality, disability inclusion, accountability to affected populations, environmental sustainability, safeguarding, human rights, climate adaptation and localisation.

Safeguarding

Everyone we work with has the right to be safe

JHI has zero tolerance for sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment, child abuse, trafficking, fraud and corruption, and any behaviour that puts people at risk. Our Safeguarding Policy applies to board members, staff, volunteers, interns, consultants, partners, contractors and anyone acting on JHI's behalf.

Our commitments

  • A Code of Conduct that sets clear standards of behaviour for everyone who works with us
  • Safe recruitment, including reference checks
  • Safeguarding training for staff and volunteers
  • Survivor-centred responses that respect confidentiality, safety and choice
  • Prompt, fair and confidential handling of every concern
